The Desert Highway Rehab on SR 18 involved significant rehabilitation work, including HMA grind and overlay, removal and replacement of PCC ramps, modification of lighting systems, and the replacement of guardrail systems. The project aimed to improve a 15-mile stretch of the SR 18 in San Bernardino County, an area known for its rugged terrain and proximity to national wilderness areas.
One of the most significant challenges faced during this project was the alignment of stakeholder priorities, which included the safety concerns of nearby residents, the preservation of wilderness areas, and the technical complexities of the work. The implementation of partnering principles, with facilitated meetings and third-party discussions, allowed both parties to address potential issues early on, ensuring a smoother progression of work.
